Hi Louise,
I appreciate your thinking and want to reassure you that this county is working to plant even more vegetable gardens than are already here. And believe me there are a lot of high producing vegetable gardens all over the place! There is a group of area business owners and other concerned individuals called Elkhart County Works Together, that was formed to give additional help to those in need. Planting vegetable gardens is only one of the ways this group is trying to help families out.

Last year I felt the Quilt Gardens Tour literally helped me to keep my art gallery open in the Old Bag Factory open. If not for the additional sales we had during the QGT months, I may have had to close this past winter. Thankfully the economy seems to be actually doing better this spring here, than it was last spring. There also are some really cool extra events being planned throughout the summer centered around the tour. Visit AmishCountry.org for more information on other activities also.
